From my working experience the workforce is made up of two types of people-
A – 80% are care and maintenance people who complete and deliver the existing and repeat orders of a business.
B – 20% are people who bring new products/services, customers and orders into a business.
The identification of a worker as A or B needs to be a voluntary process where workers are given the opportunity to put-up their hand for a specific function or activity.
When all of the functions/activities to conduct the business are allocated to A and B workers an important lesson for the workers in B is that their jobs only exist because the A workers are productive, efficient and effective, so that there is shared and mutual respect between A and B.
My application of the above reduced a workforce of 130 to 35. The 35 workers did a far bigger job and created substantially more wealth for the business. As the workforce numbers were reduced the rates of pay for remaining workers increased.
